Each year the Emergency Medicine Foundation and Blue Jay Consulting present the Emergency Department Director of the Year award to one emergency department physician leader who demonstrates the ability to collaborate across departmental boundaries to create a high caliber and high quality working environment. NES Health is pleased to announce that our own Bonnie Simmons, D.O., FACEP, Senior Vice President and Chair of Emergency Medicine of the Lutheran Medical Center Emergency Department, was a finalist this year, and received a 2013 Emergency Department Director of the Year Distinguished Recognition Award. In nominating Dr. Simmons for the honor, NES Health President & CEO, Dr. Thomas Zguris noted, “Dr. Simmons is passionate about her commitment to emergency medicine. There is nothing she won’t at least attempt if it means better patient care.”
Lutheran Medical Center is a bustling, 468-bed, full service academic teaching hospital that is the hub of Lutheran HealthCare in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Simmons leads its Emergency Department, which sees almost 70,000 patients a year. “In all my years working with ED chairmen and clinical chairs,” said Claudia Caine, Executive Vice President and Hospital Director at Lutheran, “I have never worked with anyone as talented, driven, motivated and as ‘big-picture seeing’ as Dr. Simmons. In an environment in which staff tends to gravitate toward silos and old turf-like behavior, Dr. Simmons has the ability to create a big-picture view for everyone and to get them to see the patient as the center of their world.”
“She is widely known as a top-notch clinician, administrator, and champion of community benefits. Oh, how I wish there were more Bonnie Simmons, D.O., in this world of ours!” praised Rev. Donald A. Stiger, Senior VP for Mission and Spiritual Care at Lutheran. Dr. Simmons’s ability to connect with the community through events and community service, ensure operational effectiveness within her department, maintain a synergistic approach to hospital leadership, and cultivate an environment of education are all reasons she’s deserving of this recognition. “She is extremely well respected and liked by her peers and her staff,” added Wendy Goldstein, Lutheran’s President and CEO. “She has become the ‘symbol’ of Emergency Medicine within the hospital and the community at large, where she is a frequent and accomplished speaker who connects easily with her audience.”
Lutheran’s CNO, Rosanne Raso, RN, MS, said that, “Dr. Simmons is the ‘Chair Extraordinaire’ of our Emergency Department in terms of complete immersion in all things related to quality, safety, processes, outcomes, multidisciplinary teamwork, service to patients and working relationships.” Congratulations, Dr. Simmons! You truly are extraordinary, and NES Health is very proud to have you on our team!
